2015 - The Year in Review
2015 was another busy year for both the Haight-Ashbury and for HANC. Our new President, James Sword, began his term in December, 2014. At City Hall, London Breed became president of the Board of Supervisors, the first District 5 Board President since Matt Gonzalez in 2003-2004. We continued to focus on recurring themes—housing, transit, parks, homelessness, and local elections. We were also one of the first neighborhood organizations to discuss the impacts of the so-called “sharing economy” on an urban neighborhood, with discussions at our monthly meetings and articles in the Voice.
We began 2015 with a discussion of proposed Panhandle improvements. So far we have seen an upgrade to lighting and a few additional signs, and not much else. We also discussed SFMTA’s plans for the new Area Q Residential Parking. HANC advocated for a reduction in the proposed area, and we were partially successful. The Haight-Ashbury Public Realm Plan final report was issued in February. The most desired element—pedestrian lighting—was not funded. Initial work on the plan (bulb-outs, traffic lights, moved bus stops) is scheduled to begin in 2016.
