The event was a success in attendance, participation, and content. Each speaker gave a brief presentation, followed by questions and comments for the audience. Time ran out before all questions could be answered, but participants were given the option of providing contact information to have their questions answered after the meeting ended.
Here are some of the things we learned at the meeting:
- The Board authorized $70 million in rent relief during the pandemic. There is still $24 million that has not been distributed, and is available for those needing relief.
- Due to advocacy, MUNI’s 6 and 21 lines have been restored, but nighttime MUNI service is still inadequate. Participants were encouraged to contact MUNI—“the squeaky wheel gets oiled.”
- The Board passed legislation extending eviction protections until 60 days after the Mayor’s emergency ends.
- Permanent affordable housing at 730 Stanyan is now scheduled to break ground this summer.
- Mendel’s, Love on Haight, and Club Deluxe are the neighborhood’s most recent legacy businesses.
- Anybody contemplating opening a business in the Haight-Ashbury is encouraged to visit the City’s Office of Small Business (https://sf.gov/departments/office-economic-and-workforce-development/office-small-business )
- At the height of the pandemic there had been 34 vacant storefronts. Since then 19 businesses have opened, with 5 more on the way.
- A survey of delivery drivers found that a majority would replace their vehicles with electric bikes if provided.
- There will be a community meeting regarding 730 Stanyan on April 4 (after this issue of the Voice has been sent for printing)
- The Community Ambassador Program is part of the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs. Among other responsibilities, Community Ambassadors provide safety escorts and help link community members with available social services.
- As City employees, Community Ambassadors are only available 9-5, Monday through Friday.
- Third Parent provides a food pantry every Saturday from 10:30 am to 1 pm at 442 Ashbury (at Page).
