French American International School has partnered with the San Francisco Unified School District and is taking steps to build a stand-alone Early Childhood Center for its youngest students at the former SFUSD site at 1155 Page Street. SFUSD has not used the site since 2007 and had considered it for other uses. Based on community input, the District sought proposals for educational development of the site and French American was selected from amongst several bidders.

The new facility, approximately one mile from the School’s main campus at 150 Oak St., will be purpose-built and house the School’s Pre-K 3, Pre-K 4, and Kindergarten classes. The current plan is to build a nine-classroom facility that would add to the vibrancy of the existing community, maintain a low profile in this mainly residential neighborhood, reinforce the School’s commitment to diversity, and substantially improve the safety and aesthetics of the currently abandoned plot. The target is to open this new facility in time for the 2014-2015 academic year.

At a meeting on February 5, which included representatives of three Haight Ashbury organizations (HAIA, HAMA & HANC) and three Rec & Park employees, Friends of Alvord Lake was formed. After a presentation/slide show and discussion, the group decided to seek fiscal sponsorship of the SF Parks Alliance and to start a process with the Rec & Park Department to transform the whole Alvord Lake area, from Waller to JFK drive, with the goal of recreating its former status as "the" pedestrian entrance to Golden Gate Park. A project manager will be selected within Rec & Park, public meetings will be held  with all stakeholders, landscape architects will be sought, and the whole process could take at least three years. No one envisions any buildings in the area, but an existing building/restroom could be utilized as an information center. Stay tuned!

“The Struggle for Urban Recycling and Community Gardens in San Francisco” by Soumyaa Kapil Behrens

While filming her graduate thesis project, My Garbage, My Neighborhood, a short that follows the struggle of the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council (HANC), filmmaker Soumyaa Kapil Behrens became deeply committed to HANC’s mission and its community. From this personal involvement originates 780 Frederick, a grassroots docu-noir still in the making that traces the gritty politics of gentrification in the San Francisco Haight Ashbury Neighborhood. During this film and panel event, the filmmaker will show exclusive clips from her never-before-seen feature and will discuss with the parties at stake the issues revolving around the eviction, the process of gentrification, and perhaps the loss of the counterculture which once was at the heart of the Haight Ashbury community.

On March 9, the first annual tennis and basketball tournament to raise funds for programs run at the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center in the Western Addition will be held.The tournament will benefit health, fitness, and nutrition programs offered at the center for over 700 children, youth and their families. Help Save Kezar Gardens, HANC Recycling Center and Native Plant Nursery!  At a recent meeting with Mayor Ed Lee and his staff, there was openness to discuss the relocation of the recycling portion of our site WITHIN DISTRICT 5 and to GRANDFATHER in the nursery and garden plots that already exist at the site. 

This is good news. We need your help NOW more than ever.  The Mayor needs to hear from people like you who use this center and can articulate how it impacts your life in a positive way. 

Please take a few moments to take action NOW.  Email or write a letter to Mayor Ed Lee in support of his openness to relocate the center within District 5 and grandfather the gardens in their current location.  Request to keep this center OPEN until this process is complete to ensure this vital public service is maintained.
