By Christin Evans, HANC Board Member
It was one of the most competitive mayoral races San Francisco has seen in years. And after a lengthy week that dripped out updated voting results, the city learned that it had elected District 5 Supervisor London Breed to occupy room 200 – the Mayor’s office suite at City Hall.
But the final certified result showed what we all knew – it was a nail biter of a race with 52.61% of San Francisco’s 481,991 registered voters casting a ballot – London Breed had edged out Mark Leno by just a 2,456 vote margin.
More Progressive Board
And the mayor’s race wasn’t the only closely watched race. District 8 unseated Mayor Lee appointee Jeff Sheehy in favor of more progressive Rafael Mandelman for the Castro’s Supervisor spot. This tipped the majority balance of votes towards a more progressive board.
Prop C narrowly passed to fund Child Care & Education while Prop D to fund Housing & Homeless Services was roundly defeated – in large part due to its cynical “poison pill” design by City Hall moderates to defund C if Prop D passed.
Prop F Passes
And, celebrated by many District 5 and HANC members, was the resounding victory for Prop F with over 55% votes cast to provide city-funded legal representation for tenants who are being evicted.
At our July 12th HANC meeting, we will have experts comment on what we learned about San Francisco voters from this past election with an eye toward San Francisco’s future. Calvin Welch will repeat his precinct analysis to give us a detailed look at how the Haight voted. Nuala Sawyer, from SF Weekly, will also be a part of the election post-mortem. We have also invited Dean Preston, proponent of Prop F, to provide his perspective.
Join us Thursday, July 12 from 7-9 pm at the Park Branch Library, 1833 Page Street.
