My daughters Talulah and Tomasina (TnT) recently made a new sign for the Page Slow Street at the intersection of Stanyan. We ride and walk along Page daily. We love to go slow, to breathe and to appreciate our city and the community that makes it so joyful. That’s why we were sad when the old Page Slow Street sign that greeted us every day disappeared. TnT) loved the sign, and were always curious to see what would be added or changed each time we visited, and who we might encounter on our slow treks across the city for work, school, playdates and shopping trips.
Anthony Ryan, who originally made the sign alerting drivers to the transition from a normal street to a slow street inspired us; A lovely artful sign that was visually open, colorful and uniquely embodied the wonderful Page street neighborhood in the Haight, a community that to us is still the epicenter of our diaspora Rainbow Culture in San Francisco.
So, with a little bit of wood, spray paint & a holiday from school we set to jig-sawing. Talulah and Tomasina love to make things, to share with others, and as a father who believes in helping my daughters blossom I could not deny them when they asked if they could make a new sign. We discussed many options, but felt that it was important to represent how we feel on the Page Slow Street. We make room for all, we go slow and we invite our community to come together in the street peacefully. TnT were eager to take up the jigsaw and paint again after their last public foray into art making (the destroyed fairy door in the music concourse [ https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/fairy-doors-Golden-Gate-Park-San-Francisco-16062102.php ]).
The new sign is a small token of appreciation for a street and a community we so dearly love, and hold in our rainbow hearts daily.
