By Calvin Welch, HANC Board
At HANC’s December General Membership meeting we will look at how our neighbors cast their vote for national, state and local races. We will look at the three sub areas of our neighborhood - five precincts that make up the North Panhandle, seven precincts that make up the "Flatlands" and five precincts that make up the Hill precincts. We will compare votes in selected races - President and Supervisor - to earlier elections in the same sub-areas and see what we may learn : hint—Trump’s vote INCREASED in the Haight Ashbury, more in some areas than others but an increase occurred in all three sub area
We will look at the votes for both state and local ballot measures and how HANC's recommendations fared with voters in the neighborhood: hint--voters agreed with 15 of 16 of them. HANC does not endorse candidates, only ballot measures and this year HANC Board members felt it important to actually go door to door in selected precincts distributing our recommendations. We dropped over 4,000 of them in some 10 precincts in the North Panhandle and Flatlands in September and October.
By looking closely at local voting patterns we can learn about not only our neighbors' preferences but also how we differ from voters Citywide and at the state level. As the old saying goes "all politics are local" and looking in detail at a politically conscious neighborhood we will learn real political lessons often ignored by the media.
